TWO Great Teen and Child Events Coming Up Next Weekend!

    By abnerx | News | Comments are Closed | 6 September, 2017 | 0

On Saturday, September 9th we’ll grab our waterproof boots and head to Six Mile Creek where we’ll collect and identify the insects that live among the rocks.

On Sunday, September 10th we set sail with the Floating Classroom to learn about the lake and collect water quality data.

Critters in the Stream: Biomonitoring to learn about water qualityBMI Kids

    Saturday September, 9th from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

We’ll be venturing out to Six Mile Creek to look at some of the insects that live among the rocks in the riffles of streams, otherwise known as benthic macroinvertebrates. We’ll use kick nets to capture a stream sample from the creek, pull out and identify organisms, and learn what they tell us about water quality.

Come one, come all! This event is for all ages. Feel free to make it a family affair!

*we will meet at the boat ramp near Plain St. and S Titus Ave. To learn more visit www.communityscience.org or email info@communityscience.org or adrianna@communityscience.org

    The Floating Classroom

    Sunday, September 10th, 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm.

Looking for a fun Sunday activity? Love Cayuga Lake and want to learn more about it?

Whether you’re a regular or a first-time boater, set sail with CSI to soak up some science and embrace the the onset of Fall! For the 12th year running, CSI’s 4-H2O program will be partnering with The Floating Classroom to collect and analyze water samples across Cayuga Lake. Participants will learn how to collect water samples, including samples from 150′ down in the lake, and will analyze them while on board the MV Haendal. Data collected by volunteers are included in our online database.

This is a great chance to not only participate in real scientific data collection but also view the lake from a different perspective.

We will set sail from the Ithaca Farmers Market dock at 3:30 p.m. Please arrive by 3:15 p.m. so we can get you checked in and learn your names!

Register for this FREE event by emailing info@communityscience.org or calling 607-257-6606. Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
*This program is free for children under 16 and one accompanying adult. Additional adult tickets may be purchased for $20 by contacting Bill Foster at floatingclassroom@gmail.com. All ticket proceeds will support Floating Classroom youth education programs!
