2016 Biological Monitoring Results are Now Available!

    By abnerx | News | Comments are Closed | 10 May, 2017 | 0

On May, 8th we finally finished processing the samples from the 2016 sampling season. Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who contributed to this huge effort. We had a record number of samples this year and some of these samples had a record number of organisms (Owego Creek had one sample with over 12,000 organisms – and volunteers picked and identified over 2,000 of those!!!!)

You can view the 2016 biomonitoring results here. If you want to learn more about what the metrics mean, see the biomonitoring results page on the CSI website.

It’s on to the 2017 sampling season! We had a nice turnout on Saturday May, 6th for our attempt at sampling Enfield Creek. The water level was much too high to sample, but we walked over to Lick Brook to practice sampling in the smaller creek there.
    SUMMER SAMPLING
Adrianna Hirtler will be leaving for Yosemite on Friday May, 12th. If anyone is interested in sampling for benthic macroinvertebrates before she returns to the area in late August, you are welcome to sign out equipment from the CSI lab while she’s away. CSI is open normal business hours but it is probably a good idea to let Michi or Claire know you are coming first (mschulenberg@gmail.com or claire.weston@communityscience.org). If you’ve never sampled before, contact Adrianna at adrianna@communityscience.org (she should have e-mail access throughout the summer) and she can connect you with someone who has sampling experience. There is a sign out sheet for equipment and sampling worksheets are available under volunteer resources on the CSI website. There will also be some envelopes with packets ready to go near the red BMI notebook at the CSI lab.
    Have a fabulous summer!
