The Community Science Institute (CSI) seeks a qualified individual at the junior or senior level to join our small, versatile lab team performing certified analyses of potable and non-potable water for coliform bacteria and over 15 chemical parameters.
Minimum Qualifications: Either a B.S. in chemistry or related discipline with some course work in biology; or a B.S. in a biological science with a strong minor in chemistry, including at least one semester (6 credits) of organic chemistry lecture and lab. Overall science GPA of 3.0 or higher. Excellent attention to detail. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Comfortable working in a small team setting as well as interacting with the general public. An individual who is hired at the senior level may, following an initial 6-month probationary period, be asked to take on some managerial and administrative responsibilities in addition to analytical work.
Hours: A commitment of 25 to 40 hours/week is possible, depending on the qualifications and availability of the successful applicant.
Rate: $14/hr. at the Junior Analyst level. Hourly rate or salary commensurate with experience at the Senior Analyst level. Increases based on job performance and availability of funds. Health insurance available at 50% premium. CSI is a living wage employer.
Description: This position consists primarily of performing certified analyses of water samples for coliform bacteria and a number of chemical parameters. It requires a thorough understanding of basic concepts in chemistry and biology and a solid commitment to lab work. CSI is a nonprofit, tax-exempt environmental organization that operates the largest certified water quality testing lab in Tompkins County, NYSDOH-ELAP ID# 11790. Our mission is to foster understanding and stewardship of water resources in the community, and we do this in a variety of ways, as described on our website at www.communityscience.org.
Analysts in our lab have primary responsibility for a specific area or set of tests, such as microbiology or chemistry. In addition, analysts are extensively cross-trained in a variety of test methods and can generally support and fill in for each other as needed. Training in specific analytical methods is provided on the job.
